Reactions to Wag The Dog

My reactions to Wag The Dog is the question " how do you know if anything is true anymore?". The Movie Producer and Coach changed history and viewpoints of everyone in the world. Two normal human beings did this. This tells me that society is easy to control. It also leads to asking myself the question that "how do you know if anything is true anymore?". "How do know for sure if 9/11 happened with terrorist or did it"?, "Why are we actually in Iraq"?, "Are the history books we read made up or real". From watching this movie I learned that if you want to find out if something is true for sure your gonna have to search for it yourself. People in our society read headlines on newspapers and believe it's true right on the spot. This also tells me that people in our society believe anything thats on any type of news media such as a newspaper, article on internet, News on T.V.

Part III Chapters III and IV Questions

1)O'Brien is a member of the Thought Police, do you think he can actually read Winston's mind? Did O'Brien actually permeate Winston's dream all those years ago? Explain your answer.

In my opinion, I believe that O'Brien can read Winston's mind because he can say things that are happening in Winston's mind at any moment. He repeats everything Winston thinks. It as if he controls Winston's mind. He made him believe 2 + 2 = 5. He convinced him that "Freedom is Slavery". He is a member of the Thought police so obviously he can read Winston's because the Thought Police are capable of reading minds. I believe that every person part of The Thought Police is The Inner Party.

2)
O'Brien has made it clear the Party will kill Winston at some point. We know they want folks to understand and believe before they die, but.....if they are not going to release these people back into society, why do they bother with the time and expense of the torture and "rehabilitation"?

I think they want folks to believe that so they can confess.Afterwards instead of killing them they "cure" them. They make Thought criminals believe everything that the Inner Party assigns them to believe and know. The Inner Party wants the criminals to love Big Brother, believe in NewSpeak, and Double Think .

3)
What's in Room 101? The most impressive answers will be those consisting of just one sentence.

I believe in room 101 is your worst nightmare which in Winston's case is rats.

Chapter VIII ViewPoint

In Chapter VIII, Winston enters O"Brien's house to meet him and talk to him. O"Brien says he's against the Party and he's disbelieves the principles of Ingsoc. In my opinion I do not believe that O'Brien against the party. I believe that O"Brien is making Winston comfortable by making him think that O"Brien is actually against the Party. He's manipulating Winston to believe in the Brotherhood by telling him there is no list or members in it. It's just and organization. O"Brien is making Winston and Julia comfortable by telling them that he's against the party and he's for Goldstein. When O"Brien asked Winston a number of question's that sounded like more of a dare rather than a question, Winston replied yes to all of them except the last one. He would do almost anything for the destruction and decline of Big Brother as well as The Party's method's. He answers all of O"Brien's questions "yes" as if he's going to sell himself to do anything to rid the existence of the party. He is so into the idea that he wants to destroy Big Brother and the Party that he would put sulphuric acid in a child's face.He would even lose his identity as well as his appearance to get rid of the Party. I believe that O"Brien is making Winston and Julia comfortable enough to trust him and later when he has enough information he will strike both of them.

Chapter VII Overview

In Chapter VII Winston wakes up from a horrifying dream that put guilt into his mind. He had a dream about his mother and how he tortured her by asking for more food. Since Winston father died Winston's mother was struggling so they lacked supply of living. Winston was very greedy in that period when he was less than 10 years old. When there was only one chocolate ration that could be cut into three quarters, Winston's mother gave 1 piece to him and another piece to his little sister that is very ill. Winston then jumped and swiftly took the chocolate ration piece from his little ill sister. Winston mother then screamed at Winston to give the ration back, however Winston fled out of his house while his mother was crying and hugging Winston ill dying little sister. Afterwards Winston came back to his house because of hunger, however he did not find his mother or sister and never saw them again. After that terrifying vision Winston stated the fact that the Party's has total control over you. No matter what you do, one thing or the other it does not make a difference. You would be vanished and no one will remember you and you won't be recorded in history. In other words you have been permanently deleted like a file in a computer. He thought about it after a while then realized that the Party can't control what you believe in, feelings, and perspective. Winston and Julia will always love each other no matter what happens because they cannot take away what you feel. The Party can't alter your feeling's or your perspective. It's something they would like to do and find a way to do, however they cannot do it.

Reaction to the events in Chapter VI

In chapter VI Winston finally meets O'Brien. They both have a discussion of NewSpeak and the tenth edition. A memory of Syme was also inquired by O'Brien, however that was thought crime because Syme never existed. The thought police would be on your tail for doing something like that. O'Brien told Winston to pick up the tenth edition of NewSpeak at his house. He took out a gold ink pencil and a small leather cover notebook and wrote his address in front of a telescreen. After a while Winston realized his future at hand. He knew what the next step was The Ministry Of Love. His body felt as if he was in the he was in the brink of death. He knew his future. He felt as if their was no hope. In my opinion O'Brien wouldn't be affected by thought crime because he is part of the inner party. He runs the thought police or he may be the thought police. I believe that O'Brien had a memory of Syme and wrote his address in front of the telescreen on purpose to make Winston react in a way that will make himself feel as if he is already dead.

Chapter 5 Summary

Chapter 5 mainly talks about Winston's thoughts as well perspective of Julia and Katherine. It also discusses Syme's absence. He has been vaporized. In the chess committee list it doesn't show his name crossed out. It just doesn't show it at all. He never existed. The chapter also explains the incidents of the rocket bombs and Eurasian Mongolian Soldier posters. Many more incidents of rocket bombs came into the story, a playground was struck and blew children's body's up. A film theater was also struck by a rocket bomb that caused a huge funeral. Posters of the Eurasian soldier's were torn down by proles. All the proles were preparing for hate week. Hate week had a theme song which was heard by the proles. The proles were in the liking of the song even though it was terrifying and loud. Winston talks about how his wife doesn't show any emotion and ignores all this thoughts.

Winston and Julia - Political Act

In the end of chapter 2 it means that every emotion that the people of Oceania emotions are not pure. Instead every emotion they feel such as anger, sadness, or love are all also mixed with fear and hatred. Fifty percent is pure emotion while the other Fifty percent consists of hatred and fear. The three slogans are also supporting this political act in a sense. Winston quoted in the book " In the old days, he thought, a man looked at a girls body and thought it was desirable, and that was the end of the story"."But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays". "No emotion was pure because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred". Every time you have a emotion such as happiness, you always must have a feeling of hatred or fear. It was a sign of protest and boycott struck against the party.

Are we Proles?

I believe in a way we are Proles because we are so used to our lifestyle of consumer needs and entertainment that we do not seek out the truth or know whats really going on . In 9/11 we sent all our money into congress and let them decide and handle what to do. How do they know whats actually happening with the money we gave. One reason people do this is because of FEAR. They were so scared after 9/11 they didn't want to anything. This relates in 1984 where people don't know whats really going on in their society and following along with whatever big brother says because of FEAR. The people of Oceania are so used to it now or another way to say it brain washed that they don't really know or care whats going on anymore and that is very similar to whats happening in our society. The inner party distracts them with things like video games, sports, food, movies, etc. which is also very similar in our society as well. I think George Orwell is trying to tell us is "how do you know if you are not being brain washed or proles?" and he's giving an example by showing us how Winston and his people live in Oceania.

1984 assignment- Lunch with Syme

I don't think were heading into a society where people are gonna stop using proper words and use I.M language. I think when we write the im language word "lol" is an abbreviation like etc. I think we are inventing new ways of abbreviation by using I.M language. I don't think that were are living in a place that Syme would like because even though we use I.M language a lot I dont think he would like the way were using antonyms and synonym properly in the English language. I also think that George Orwell is trying to tell us whats the point of have proper English words when people don't use them and destroying the spelling by using made up abbreviation in not just I.M language but in society like the word "nigger" that changed overtime in history by pronunciation and definition. Look the way people use it now. I believe I'm in both sides referring the question "Do you think our society is heading to the path that Syme is talking about".

Planet In Peril

I think the documentary was very interesting. It was very interesting the way CNN used hidden camera's to videotape the selling of endangered species in a black market in China. I think species loss is a major issue in the world were living in. I believe that endangered animals should not be sold in China illegally. This affects us in many ways. Sure we need animals for fur and leather, but the way they do it tells us that there wont be any left. We should stop killing endangered animals so after 10 years or so their will be more than enough for the world to use again. Also poachers play a major role in this issue. They cause as much loss in endangered species as the people that sell it in China illegally. Another major issue is overpopulation. There is going to be 50 percent more humans population of the world by 2050. That doesn't mean there's not gonna be enough space in earth, there's just not gonna be enough resources in the world to support everybody. I believe this issue will be resolved by people finding different ways to use resource. For example solar power cars or someone might discover how to use milk as fuel for cars. The other issue I'm also concerned with as well as everyone else is Global Warming.Polar bears are soon to be considered endangered species because of Global Warming. Antarticas and Alaskas glaciers may melt because of Global warming. Polar Bears main source of food is seals. Seals are land and water creatures so that means if the glaciers melt they can swim and run away for the polar bears leaving them starving..

George Orwell

George Orwell's stories he wrote were the times the world had many conflicts and wars. This was his influence. He was living in the earth during World War I, World War II, Spanish Civil War which were some of his influences. When he resigned being a writer he moved to Paris and wrote short stories however, he could not publish them. Originally titled Last man however, they changed it for unknown reasons to Nineteen-eighty four was one of his most inspirational books because it talks about the government and how its unfair.

Big Brother Concept

I believe the Big Brother concept can happen in real life because the government has so much power it would be hard to go against them. One way it's happening today is the yellow cab taxis having a Gps installed in their car. They can see everything they do. The negative effect to this is that they are invading they're privacy. The positive effect to this is they can check if they're goofing off. They may be wasting gas by using the cab for their own purposes, or doing illegal stuff like selling drugs.

Biggest Lies in History

I believe the that the Biggest Lie in history is the selling of indulgences from the Roman Catholic Church. Indulgences is when you pay money to get a piece of paper that can guarantee you a trip to heaven and forgiveness of all your sins. The church also sold simony's where you could pay to get positions in the church. It was a scheme by the church however, there was one person that stood up to this scheme and that person was Martin Luther. He stood up to this lie by forming the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther as his first move made the 95 theses that talks about the evils about the church and the selling of indulgences. The church then was finding that the Protestant Reformation was actually a threat. The churched warned Martin Luther to stop this or he will be excommunicated. Martin Luther then died February 18, 1546 at Eisleben. The church later in history collapse after the Black Death.

Possibility in our society

I think this may be possible in our society because our government control a lot of things in our lives like having the power to put different laws, our currency, and our technology. Our government may seal information because the truth may set their people to not trust them. Its just the typical way we use the truth, for example if I didn't feel like doing Mr. Sipkins homework and the next day I tell him I forget and make up a story it would make him less mad to hear that then i just didn't do it. Thats the same way with the government.

Government withholding the truth

-It would be possible for the government to manipulate information because they are in control of it and they can lie to the media if they wanted to causing people to think in other perspectives. They may have planned out the lie of their story a while ago to make it convincing.

-The government would want to conceal information because that information may lead people to believe that their government and their state was at fault as well as giving them more distrust, however it had to be done.
